Host a Lunch and Learn in 10 Easy Steps
Guild member Liz Akert recently invited Maddie Walker, education program manager, with the Women's Center for Advancement (WCA) to Union Pacific for a lunch and learn presentation about supporting victims of domestic violence in the workplace. Liz was willing to share the steps she followed in putting the event together. No Consider these ten steps to hosting a successful lunch and learn with the WCA at your workplace.
1. Contact the WCA stating you are interested in hosting a lunch and learn at your company/organization/church/etc. Discuss potential dates and topics for the presentation.
The WCA has a number of established presentations to fit your needs.
2. Invite your company's employee assistance program representative to give an overview of the resources available.
3. Reserve a location with access to a computer and projector to host the event.
4. Obtain the presentation from the WCA ahead of time.
5. Run the presentation through necessary channels within your organization for approval (think Law, Corporate Relations/Communications, Employee Assistance).
6. Advertise your event using weekly newsletters, signage and at other events. Give statistics from the WCA and state the importance of educating yourself on this topic.
7. Create a sign-up sheet for the event, keeping in mind the maximum capacity of the space you have available.
8. On the day of the event, arrive early and make sure the room is set up and the technology is working. Greet the WCA representative and assist them in setting up.
9. Following the event, email the participants with the contact information of the speakers and the presentation. You can also attach a survey to receive feedback on the event (Survey Monkey has free, easy to set up, simple surveys).
10. Thank the WCA staff for their time and effort in presenting at your organization through a thank you card or email.
